Who we are- Dr Simon Ewen and Dr Ruth Swarbrick


Dr Simon Ewen

MB ChB(Otago) FRCOG FRANZCOG

Simon is a specialist Gynaecologist and Obstetrician. He qualified as a doctor at Otago University in 1984 and then moved to the UK to complete his training as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist.

After completing his specialist training he did research into ways of treating endometiosis to reduce pain and has published numerous articles in international journals.

He undertook further specialist training in minimal access(telescopic) gynaecological surgery and has been a mentor to many other doctors wishing learn these skills. He also undertook further treatment in modern management of urinary problems in women (incontinence).

He worked for 8 years as a consultant in the UK, in Portsmouth, where, with a colleague he set up the Southern Endometriosis Centre to further develop a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment and management of endometriosis.

He has special interests in endometriosis, the modern management of menorrhagia/period problems, prolapse and incontinence surgery and is an accredited Colposcopist.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (London) UK and Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists .

He currently works as a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Rotorua Hospital.

Ruth Swarbrick

MB BS ( London) MRCOG MFFP BSC( Hons)

Ruth qualified as doctor in the UK and then trained as a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. During this time, she did extensive training in reproductive and sexual healthcare including menopause, contraception, sexual health, premenstrual syndrome, and libido. She worked in the UK , in Portsmouth,as a consultant in Contraception and Sexual Health before moving to NZ with her husband, Simon and two children.

She works part-time as a consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Rotorua Hospital and also does some contraception and sexual health work locally in Rotorua.

She is a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the Faculty of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care in the UK.
